Before his tragic death from malaria at age 40, Fausto Coppi continued to race, doing so in teams that often bore his name associated with that of a sponsor. The last of these teams was Tricofilina-Coppi, sponsored by a brand of hair glitter.
The first Spanish victory in the history of the Tour de France came in 1959 at the hands of Federico Martín Bahamontes under the orders of Coppi. But not everything was a bed of roses between Bahamontes and the Italian champion. Bahamontes said "I signed with him, yes, for 500,000 pesetas, but I demanded the hiring of two domestiques, Julián San Emeterio and José Herrero Berrendero. So as not to be alone, not for anything else. And he started ripping us off. Ripping off our salary! First, he rented us to the Kas to run the Vuelta, where I had to retire because I had a seven-mouth boil next to my ass. Horrible! Then he goes and rents us the Condor to run the Tour of Switzerland. And that's where my domestiques said: “This is enough. Either we get payed or we don't ride." I took Coppi and almost killed him. He paid us and we ran the Tour, and I won it. "
The jersey in the picture is the one Bahamontes wore when he won the Tour de France. At that time the Tour was run by countries, so the jersey bears the colors of the Spanish team with Coppi’s team advertising.
