The team was founded in 1989 under the patronage of ONCE, a Spanish organization whose main purpose is to improve the quality of life of blind people, and under the direction of Manolo Saiz.

In the individual category they won the Vuelta a España 4 times: in 1991 with Melcior Mauri, in 1995 with Laurent Jalabert, and in 1996 and 1997 with Alex Zülle. However, they never won the Tour de France, in which Zülle in 1995 and Joseba Beloki in 2002 were on the verge of victory, although they achieved the teams classification in both editions.

In 2003, after 15 seasons in the peloton and more than 400 victories, the national organization decided to abandon the sponsorship of the team after having achieved its objectives, and having achieved a brand awareness of 98% (out of 100 Spaniards, 98 know what it is ONCE).

Because the team's usual color was yellow, they changed to pink on the Tour de France.

Already under the sponsorship of Liberty Seguros, in 2006 Manolo Saiz was implicated in the doping cases of Operation Puerto.
