Tinkoff - Saxo was one of the most prominent teams in the first two decades of the 21st century. From its creation in 1998 until the end of 2013, it had a Danish license, then transitioning to a Russian license from 2014 to 2016.

The team was founded by Danish cyclist Bjarne Riis, winner of the 1996 Tour de France. It was initially named Team CSC until 2008, and then became Team Saxo Bank from 2009 onwards. In late June 2012, another bank, Tinkoff Bank, owned by Russian magnate Oleg Tinkov, joined as a second sponsor. The team debuted as Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank in that year's Tour de France. Starting in 2014, Tinkov became the team's owner after reaching an agreement and purchasing the UCI ProTeam license from Riis.

In the year 2015, Peter Sagan won his first World Championship title while riding for Tinkoff-Saxo, the same year that Alberto Contador won his seventh and final Grand Tour, his second Giro d'Italia.
