A spring classic in August
Looking at the profile of the Clásica Ciclista de San Sebastián, we see that it has a certain resemblance to the Ardennes classics, especially with Liège-Bastogne-Liège. More than 230 kilometers with about 4000 meters of cumulative positive hight, spread over 7 mountains, make the race perfect for cyclists who appreciate hilly profiles.
Among them, the name of the current champion Julian Alaphilippe (1200) comes to mind first, after his spectacular season culminated in a perfect Tour de France, with two stage victories and 14 days on yellow. The only doubt we have left is to see if he still has a gram of strength left after the enormous efforts on the Tour. If so, Alaphilippe starts as the favorite.
In a startlist absolutely full of stars, other men who will apreciate the profile are Jakob Fuglsang (1200), who will want to claim himself after a Tour in which everything went wrong, as well as the winners of previous editions Alejandro Valverde ( 1200), Bauke Mollema (1000), Tony Gallopin (800), Luis León Sánchez (800), Roman Kreuziger (200) or Adam Yates (1200). His twin brother Simon Yates (1200) will also be on the startlist, as well as the powerful Belgian classics riders Greg Van Avermaet (1200), Dylan Teuns (1000) or Tiesj Benoot (800), an the the brand new Tour de France champion, Egan Bernal (1200). Other serious candidates may be Maximilian Schachmann (1200), Alexey Lutsenko (1000) or Michael Woods (800).
The field factor must also be taken into account, and among the Basque cyclists, Mikel Landa (800), Pello Bilbao (600), Mikel Nieve (600), Omar Fraile (600) and Gorka Izagirre (400) stand out .
Finally, we would like to mention some of the young people in the peloton who are already standing out at the highest level. In addition to Egan Bernal (1200), Remco Evenepoel (400), Tadej Pogacar (1000), Enric Mas (1000), Laurens de Plus (600) or Hugh John Carthy (800) are demonstrating that the generational relay is already a reality.
