The cobblestones festival begins
After more than a year and a half waiting, fans of the cobblestones classics will finally receive what they crave so much: Gent-Wevelgen, both men's and women's event, will be the first race in the Belgian stones of WorldTour category of this unusual 2020.
Due to the cancellation of the E3 BinckBank Classic and the Dwars door Vlanderen, as well as the women's Bevrijdingsronde van Drenthe, Gent-Wevelgen takes on special importance in Cycling Fantasy this 2020, as it will be one of the only three races to score for the combined Cobblestones ranking, along with monuments Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix.
As far as the route is concerned, Gent-Wegelgem is the least demanding of the three races, as the cobbled sectors are less and further from the finish line, so the top-10s tend to be a combination of pave specialists and sprinters.
For the men's event, some of the favorites are Alexander Kristoff (600), Wout Van Aert (1000), Oliver Naesen (800), Mathieu Van Der Poel (400), Danny Van Poppel (600), Pascal Ackermann (1000), Bob Jungels (400), Sam Bennet (1000), Sep Vanmarcke (400), Stefan Küng (600), John Degenkolb (600), Jasper Stuyven (600) or Mads Pedersen (400), although there are still many riders to sign in.
For the women's event, the favorites are strong riders with a good sprint, such as Kirsten Wild (800), Lorena Wiebbes (1200), Marta Bastianelli (1000), Amy Pieters (1000), Lotte Kopecky (800), Mariane Vos (1200) or Chloe Hoskings (800). If Annemiek Van Vleuten (1200), Elisabeth Deignan (1000) or Anna Van der Breggen (1200) end up on the startlist, it cannot be ruled out that some of them manage to arrive with a distant attack alone, since all three have shown in multiple occasions to be capable of everything.
