A classic for climbers before the Itzulia

Since 1999, the race organized by the Club Ciclista Estella has been called Gran Premio Miguel Indurain in honor of the five-time Tour de France winner, although its history dates back to 1951, when it was held for the first time, so we are talking about a classic that is already part of the tradition.

In addition, its temporal and geographical proximity to the Itzulia Basque Country, which starts two days later, make it the ideal appetizer for the one-week race, and several cyclists will participate in both events.

Route

The race covers a distance of 204 km with different laps around Estella, without big mountain passes but without a flat meter. The last categorized climb of the day, the Alto de Eraul (3.8 km at 5.6%) is crested 20 km from the finish line, but after that there will still be two tough slopes: Alto Ibarra (0.6 km at 5%) and Alto de Muru (1.7 km at 4.8%), which could be decisive for the race outcome. In short, a sawtooth-like route ideal for climbers.

Favorites

Alejandro Valverde (800) will try to defend the title that he won last year for the third time in his career, although in the Volta a Catalunya he was not doing very well. Sergio Higuita (600), João Almeida (1200), Alexandr Vlasov (1200), Enric Mas (1000), Marc Hirschi (800), Pello Bilbao (800), Pierre Latour (400), Jesús Herrada (400), Ben Hermans (400), Lennard Kämna (400) or Warren Barguil (400) are also part of the list of favorites.
