A classic with history, next WWT race

The second round of the Women’s WorldTour calendar will take place this Sunday, one day after Milano-Sanremo, in what is a fantastic weekend for cycling fans in northern Italy. In addition, the Trofeo Alfredo Binda - Comune di Cittiglio is the longest-running event on the current women's calendar (it has been held since 1974), and is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious of the season.

The race pays tribute to Alfredo Binda, one of the most important cyclists of the 20s and 30s, who after retiring led the Italian team that won the Tour de France in 1948 with Gino Bartali and in 1949 and 1952 with Fausto Coppi. Binda was born in the town of Cittigio, where the race takes place.

Route

The route is 142 kilometers long and more covers more than 2000 meters of accumulated positive slope. The second half of the race takes place in four laps on a circuit that includes two climbs: the first is short and explosive (0.7 km at 7%) and is ideal for attacking, and the second is longer but not as steep ( 3.4 km at 4%).

Favorites

Mariane Vos (1200) will be on the start line to defend the title won in 2019 (in 2020 it was not disputed). In fact, this is a fetish race for Vos, who is the cyclist with more victories, with a total of 4 (2009, 2010, 2012 and 2019). The two-time winner of the race Elizabeth Deignan (1000) (2015, 2016) and her teammate Elisa Longo Borghini (1200) will also be in Cittiglio. Other possible contenders can be Chantal Blaak (600) or Liane Lippert (800), although the startlist is still in early stages and many riders are missing.
