A European championship for sprinters
The reigning European men's road champion, Sonny Colbrelli (800), will not be able to defend the title won last year in Italy, as he has not competed again since suffering a cardiac arrest just after crossing the finish line of the stage 1 of this year's Volta a Catalunya. So, the wearer of the continental champion star-studded jersey for the next 12 months will necessarily have to be another cyclist, and given the route and the participants registered in the race, it is more than likely that he will be a sprinter.
Route
The 2022 European Championships are held in Munich, Germany. The route of the men’s road race, which totals 207 km, includes the climbs of Kesselberg (5 km at 4.9%) and Schlossberg (1.1 km at 9.7%) in the early part of the race, where the break of the day will be formed. However, the last 100 km of the route are completely flat and there is plenty of time for the sprinters’ teams to control the race.
Favorites
France with Arnaud Demare (1200), Netherlands with Fabio Jakobsen (800), Belgium with Tim Merlier (800), Norway with Alexander Kristoff (800), Denmark with Mads Pedersen (1000), Ireland with Sam Bennet (1000), Germany with Pascal Ackerman (800) and Phil Bauhaus (600) and Italy with Giacomo Nizzolo (800) and Alberto Dainese (400) are selections that will work for a sprint, so it seems almost impossible that this will not be the outcome of the race.
