A tough day in San Sebastián

The Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa was first held in 1981 and quickly established itself as the most important one-day race in the Basque Country and throughout Spain. With a route featuring more than 4,000 meters of climbing, the Klasikoa is one of the most mountainous classics of the entire year, attracting some of the world's best climbers and punchers year after year. Currently, it is the only one-day WorldTour race on the Spanish calendar.

Route

The route is similar to previous editions of the race, starting with undulating terrain that favors the formation of the day's breakaway, while the race becomes tougher in the final 100 kilometers. First, the traditional climbs of Jaizkibel (6.9 km at 6.1%) and Erlaiz (4 km at 10.4%) will thin out the peloton before the first passage through the finish line in San Sebastián, located 48 kilometers from the end. Here lies the main difference with the 2022 edition of the race, as before the final ascent to Murgil Tontorra (2.1 km at 9.8%), the climb to Mendizorrotz (4.1 km at 7.3%) has been added.

Favorites

Double race winner Remco Evenepoel (1200) is the main favorite for another victory. Pello Bilbao (1000), Mattias Skjelmose (1000), Carlos Rodríguez (800), Juan Ayuso (1000), Giulio Ciccone (800), Romain Bardet (800), Simon Yates (800), Julian Alaphilippe (800), Neilson Powless (600), Daniel Felipe Martínez (600), Santiago Buitrago (600), Ion Izagirre (600), Michael Woods (600), Warren Barguil (400), Ben Healy (200), Maxim Van Gils (400), Victori Lafay (400), Rubén Guerreiro (400), and Tiesj Benoot (400) form an impressive list of candidates for victory.
