Climbers' Paradise

The Tour of the Alps arrives next Monday to test the climbers’ legs before the Giro d'Italia, which starts in twenty days. The former Giro del Trentino changed its name in 2017 when the Tyrol–South Tyrol–Trentino Euroregion decided to give a boost to the race. This transborder association is composed of the Austrian state of Tyrol and the Italian autonomous provinces of South Tyrol and Trentino, and the race takes place in this espectacular alpine setting. In total, the race is composed by five challenging stages in the mountains where we will get a glimpse of who is strong before the Giro, although it should be noted that the two main favorites for the Italian grand tour, Remco Evenepoel (1200) and Primož Roglič (1200), will not compete in this race.

Route

Stages 1, 2, and 5 present medium mountain profiles, while the high mountains appear on stages 3 and 4. The first three days feature mountaintop finishes and there are no opportunities for sprinters. The third stage, with the finish in Bretonico - San Valentino (15.2 km at 7.6%), is the queen stage of the race and will undoubtedly be decisive for the general classification.

Favorites

Last year's winner Aleksandr Vlasov (1200) leads a list of favorites that also presents a very strong Ineos Grenadiers squad, including Geraint Thomas (1000), Thymen Arensman (800), Pavel Sivakov (600), and Tao Geoghegan Hart (400). Hugh John Carthy (600), Jack Haig (600), Rigoberto Urán (600), Santiago Buitrago (400), Lennard Kämna (400), Iván Ramiro Sosa (200), Cian Uijtdebroeks (200), Ben Hermans (200), Domenico Pozzovivo (400), Felix Gall (200), Lorenzo Fortunato (200), and Geoffrey Bouchard (400) could also perform well in the race.
