Isaac del Toro shines in his first WorldTour victory
Stage 2 of the 2024 Santos Tour Down Under, from Norwood to Lobethal, was a thrilling race with several key moments. Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro of UAE Team Emirates made a significant impact by claiming his first professional victory in the WorldTour. This remarkable feat was achieved with a late attack in the final kilometer, showcasing his potential as one of the most exciting prospects in the WorldTour this year.
The stage began with a cool temperature around 15C, which might have been a relief after the previous day's 30C heat. The race leader, Bora-Hansgrohe’s Australian rider Sam Welsford, wore the Santos Ochre Leader’s jersey proudly after his win in Stage 1. However, the day belonged to del Toro, who now leads the race and holds the Zwift Young Rider jersey.
Key points in the race included the King of the Mountain (KOM) challenges and intermediate sprints. Australian National Team's Luke Burns, who was formerly a triathlete and only recently switched to cycling, claimed the efex King of the Mountain jersey. He demonstrated impressive skill, especially considering his relatively short time in the sport.
There were several attacks and strategic moves throughout the race, with riders like Jardi van der Lee of EF Education-Easypost and the Australian National Team members actively participating in the breakaways and sprints. Despite mechanical issues faced by notable riders like Elia Viviani and pre-race sprint favorite Caleb Ewan, the peloton remained active and competitive throughout.
The race ended with a bunch sprint in Lobethal, where Biniam Girmay of Intermarché-Wanty finished in fourth place, securing the Ziptrak Sprint jersey for the next stage. Ewan managed to claim fifth place, showing resilience despite his earlier mechanical problem.
As the race heads into Stage 3, del Toro's victory sets an exciting tone for the remaining stages, with various riders showcasing their strengths and strategies in what promises to be an enthralling Tour Down Under.
