The annual tribute to Induráin
The Gran Premio Miguel Induráin is the most important race in Navarra and one of the most prominent events on the Spanish calendar. Although the origins of the race date back to 1951, since 1999 the race has been named after the legendary Navarrese cyclist Miguel Induráin, the five-time Tour de France champion born in Villava, about 50 km from where the race is held.
Route
The race covers a 203-kilometer route that, as always in this part of the world, is a constant up and down. 3445 meters of positive slope mean we are facing a tough race, where good climbing abilities are needed. The route circles around the town of Estella with four categorized climbs, the last of which is the Alto de Eraul (3.8 km at 5.6%), which is crowned 10 km from the finish. However, the cyclists still have to overcome two tough climbs afterwards: the Alto Ibarra (0.6 km at 5%) and the Alto de Muru (1.7 km at 4.8%) are usually decisive for the final outcome of the race.
Favorites
Despite being a 1.Pro race, the temporal and geographical proximity to the Itzulia Basque Country often means that some of the stars who will compete in the Basque stage race are also present in Estella. Enric Mas (1000), Jai Hindley (800), Juan Ayuso (600), Mattias Skjelmose (800), Diego Ulissi (800), Ion Izagirre (600), Andreas Kron (600), Pierre Latour (400), Felix Grossschartner (400), Victor Lafay (400) Esteban Chaves (600), Jesús Herrada (400), and Natnael Tesfazion (200) are some of the race favorites.
