The Giro Donne, in the shadow of the Tour
For the second consecutive year, the Giro d’Italia Donne begins on the eve of the Tour de France’s Grand Départ. This peculiar situation in the calendar, combined with the organizational difficulties of the Italian event, causes the race to be completely overshadowed by the Tour. In fact, the Giro d’Italia Donne risks losing its WorldTour status if it doesn't solve the problems with television coverage that have emerged in recent days, which would be a shame, as we are facing the most historic of the three women's grand tours.
Route
The first of the 9 stages that make up the race will be a short 4.4 km time trial that will determine the first wearer of the pink jersey. Without any high mountain stages, the abundance of medium mountain stages stands out, with a total of five (of which 3 feature mountain-top finishes, stages 5, 6, and 7). The race also includes three opportunities for sprinters (stages 3, 8, and 9).
Favorites
Four days before the start of the race, very few teams have confirmed their lineups. The winner of the 2022 edition of the race, Annemiek Van Vleuten (1200), will try to defend her title, while Elisa Longo Borghini (1200), Juliette Labous (1000), Marta Cavalli (800), Evita Muzic (800), Gaia Realini (600), and Erica Magnaldi (400) are some of the main alternatives for now, as we are especially awaiting the complete SD Worx lineup.
For the sprints, Marianne Vos (1200), Marta Bastianelli (800), Tereza Neumanová (200), Silvia Persico (1000), Silvia Zanardi (400), and Megan Jastrab (200) are some of the fastest riders present in the provisional start list.
