The only Portuguese race in the ProSeries

In recent years, the Volta ao Algarve has been established as the most important race taking place in Portugal, as it is the only one to be introduced in the ProSeries calendar, the second level of cycling races. The Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta, the competition with the longest history, is of a lower category (2.1).

Route

5 stages make up the race for this edition, and the varied profiles offer opportunities for all types of rider. The sprinters will have their sights set on stages 1 and 4, while the climbers will focus on the second stage, with the final double climbs to Picota (10.3 km at 5.3%) and Foia (7.7 km at 6,1%). The time trialists will also have their day in the 32 km time trial on day four, and the puncheurs will appreciate the final ramp on the last stage, in Malhao (2.6 km at 9.5%).

Favorites

The favorites for the general classification must necessarily be complete riders, with good performance both in time trials and climbing.

The winner in 2021 João Rodrigues (200) starts with the number 1 and is usually in his peak form of the season in this race, but it will be difficult for him to defend the title, given the list of top riders present on the starting list: Remco Evenepoel (1200), Ethan Hayter (1000), Geraint Thomas (600), Brandon McNulty (800), Ion Izagirre (600) and Michal Kwiatkowski (600) are some of the main contenders for the general classification.
