The sterrato festival

The beauty of the Tuscan landscape and the harshness of the gravel sectors make the Strade Bianche one of the most spectacular races of the year. Even though it is a young classic (this year it reaches its 16th edition), the race has earned a special place in the hearts of fans and cyclists. Nobody wants to miss the sterrato festival!

Route

The women's and men's races share much of the route on the famous unpaved roads around Siena. The women's event has a route of 136 kilometers and 8 sterrato sectors that add up to more than 30 kilometers. The men's race, for its part, totals 184 kilometers, of which 63 on gravel roads, divided into 11 sectors. As usual, the finish line of both races is located in Piazza del Campo in Siena, which is accessed after the final climb to Via Santa Caterina, which has a maximum gradient of 16%.

Women's Race Favorites

Last year's winner Chantal Blaak (600), 2020 and 2019 winner Annemiek Van Vleuten (1200) and 2017 winner Elisa Longo Borghini (1200) are three of the top favourites. Marianne Vos (1200), Demi Vollering (1000), Lotte Kopecky (1000), Lucinda Brand (1000), Cecile Uttrup Ludwig (1000), Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (1000), Mavi Garcia (800), Katarzyna Niewiadoma (1000) or Marta Cavalli (800) are other stars of the Women's WorldTour who start with options for victory.

Men's Race Favorites

Neither 2021 winner Mathieu Van Der Poel (1000) nor 2020 winner Wout Van Aert (1200) will be on the race, so the race is more open than ever. On paper, Julian Alaphilippe (1200) is the top favorite, as on the tough ramps of the final climb to Siena he can make the difference. Perhaps Alaphilippe's main rivals will be Tadej Pogačar (1200) and Thomas Pidcock (200), although the startlist is not lacking in strong men to whom the route is well suited such as Tiesj Benoot (600), Alejandro Valverde (800), Jakob Fulglsang (800), Benôit Cosnefroy (400), Michal Kwiatkowski (600), Greg Van Avermaet (600), Alessandro Covi (400), Magnus Cort Nielsen (600), Gianni Moscon (400) or Matej Mohorič (800).
