Jim Ochowicz, a former United States Olympic cyclist, founded the 7-Eleven team in 1981 as an amateur team, to prepare riders for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where the United States won 9 medals in cycling. In 1985, already as a professional team, 7-Eleven was invited to the Giro d'Italia, where they won two stages with Ron Kiefel and Andrew Hampsten. From 1990 and until its end in 1996, the team received sponsorship from Motorola and added a young rider named Lance Armstrong to its ranks. In 1993, at the age of 21, Armstrong becomes world champion and wins his first stage in the Tour de France.
