Tom Simpson was one of the great stars of British cycling in the 1960s. Winner of a Milano-Sanremo, a Ronde Van Vlaanderen, and a Giro di Lombardia, his greatest triumph was the 1965 World Championship, where he prevailed in a mano a mano finish with Rudi Altig. However, much of the mystique surrounding Simpson is due to his death during the 13th stage of the 1967 Tour de France, on the ascent of Mont Ventoux. The autopsy revealed that a combination of amphetamines, alcohol, and intense heat caused his death.
